The Inca Trail is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful trails in America and therefore an unforgettable experience. The road leads through the protected forest jungle, where it passes several Inca archaeological monuments and offers breathtaking views. The Incas used this route for the pilgrimage to the sacred citadel Machu Picchu.

Itinerary

DAY 1: CUSCO - KILOMETER 82 - WAYLLABAMBA - AYAPATA

We will leave Cusco at 5:30am in a tourist bus and head to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Before we reach our starting point, KILOMETER 82, we will have a small stop in Ollantaytambo and we will have the option for breakfast. Before starting the Inca Trail at KILOMETER 82. Here we will find the rest of the group and we will have to present our documents for control and registration. After crossing the Urubamba River (2200m) we will start the legendary Inca trail. On the first day the road is easy to walk. In Miskay we will have lunch on a small bank of the river explaining some information about the archaeological complex of Llactapata. After this, we will continue our excursion to Wayllabamba (3100m/10170f) and ascend to Ayapata the camp where we will spend the night. From here, we have a great view of the mysterious Nevado de la Veronica.

DAY 2: AYAPATA - LLULLUCHAPAMPA - WARMIHUAÑUSCA PASS - PACAYMAYU - RUNKURAKAY PASS - CHAQUICOCHA

The second day is ” the free excursion day “, this means that everyone should walk at their own pace. Early in the morning the road will lead us towards the Llulluchapampa Valley (3850m/12631f). During 3km of hiking – you will enjoy the humid forest and the sounds of water. From Llulluchapampa, you will follow the trail for 2-3 hours until you reach the highest point of this section, the Warmihuañusca (the Pass of Death) (4200m/113780f). This climb is known as the most difficult part of the Inca Trail. After a short stop at the summit, you continue your hike with a long and steep slope to the Pacaymayu River towards the Runkurakay pass (3050m/10007f) until you reach our campsite called Chaquicocha at (3650m/11975f). Here you can relax from the day, enjoying an amazing view over the mountains.

Total distance: 15 kilometers approx.


DAY 3: CHAQUICOCHA - PHUYUPATAMARCA - WIÑAYHUAYNA

The third day is the most beautiful. You can notice a change in the ecosystem by walking through the Wiñayhuayna rainforest. We will pass two small lakes at the top of the second pass (3950m). This will be a peaceful climb through a small Inca tunnel, offering a magnificent view over the Urubamba River of the Sacred Valley. The nearest settlement is called Phuyupatamarca / ” the City above the clouds ” (3600m/11811f). A well-preserved site with long chain Inca baths where one can enjoy the impressive ancient engineering. We pass another Inca tunnel before visiting the Wiñayhuayna complex/”Always Young” (2650m/8694f). The Inca staircase will zigzag until you reach a red-roofed white building, our last camping site, and also a position with hot water (S5) and bottled drinks.

DAY 4: WIÑAYHUAYNA - MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO

Magical Sunrise and Special Tour in Machu Picchu

We will start the day very early, with a delicious breakfast at 4:30 a.m., full of energy for our adventure.

The Inti Punku Challenge (Sun Gate)

Immediately after breakfast, we will head to the checkpoint to start an exciting walk with flashlights to the famous Inti Punku (Sun Gate). This hike is one of the most spectacular parts of the trip, as the goal is to arrive just in time to witness the sun rise over Machu Picchu. The view of the citadel emerging from the morning mist as it is illuminated by the sun is absolutely unforgettable!

The last and triumphant climb will take us about an hour, and we will arrive at the citadel of Machu Picchu (at $2400 text{ m}$ / $7874 text{ ft}$) around 8:00 a.m.

Classic Exploration & Photos

Once inside, we will enjoy the serenity and spiritual charm of this sacred place. It will be the perfect time to capture our group photos and classic postcards of Machu Picchu with that stunning background.

After this photo session, we will go to the control to leave our backpacks. We will start a 2 hour and 30 minute guided tour of the most spectacular part of the citadel, following Circuit 3B.

Our guide will take us through highlights and special places such as:

  • The fascinating temples  of the sun, the Pachamama and the water
  • The fascinating Palaces 
  • Temples of the Condor and Water Mirrors
  • The old Water Canals.

  • Huayna Picchu: to visit Huayna Picchu the reservation has to be made well in advance, spaces are limited and it is an additional payment of 65.00 dollars.
